About Antony Gormley's Plinth

THE FOURTH PLINTH

The Fourth Plinth is the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square, London.

It was designed by Sir Charles Barry and built in 1841 to display an equestrian statue. Because there were not enough funds available at the time it has remained empty and is now often referred to as the ‘empty plinth’.

The Fourth Plinth project is now managed by the Mayor of London’s office, with advice from a special commissioning panel resulting in several works of art being displayed.

Antony Gormley’s One & Other takes place in Trafalgar Square in London between 6th July and 14th October 2009.

2,400 people will each spend one hour on the plinth and Antony Gormley is allowing all participants total freedom of self-representation.
